Sponsored by the “We Care for California” coalition of healthcare providers, including MMS, the rally will promote awareness of the threat that looming Medi-Cal cuts pose to healthcare access, especially in rural and underserved communities. The goal of 10,000 attendees is easily within reach, and all local healthcare workers are urged to register by visiting www.wecareforca.org. The rally is scheduled to run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. If you can’t spend all day in Sacramento, you can spend just an hour or two, but you should still register at www.wecareforca.org. June 4 Medi-Cal rally flyer Dr. Irina deFischer re-elected to MMS presidency Dr. Irina deFischer, a family physician and geriatrician at Kaiser Petaluma, has been re-elected president of MMS for the 2013-14 fiscal year following a vote by membership in May. This will be her third term as president. She first served during 1994-95 and is about to finish her second term. She will be succeeded in July 2014 by Dr. Georgianna Farren, director of the Marin Community Clinics, who was chosen as MMS president-elect. Other physicians serving on the MMS board include Dr. Anne Cummings and Dr. Peter Bretan. Dr. Lori Selleck was chosen as a delegate to CMA. Teen dating violence workshop at Marin General on June 8 Did you know that one in three teenagers in the United States is a victim of physical, sexual, emotional or verbal abuse from a dating partner? To help physicians and nurses identify and respond to teen dating violence, the Center for Domestic Peace is sponsoring a free workshop on Saturday afternoon, June 8, in the conference center at Marin General Hospital. Participants will learn to recognize and screen for teen dating violence; learn how to assess for risk; and identify three strategies to increase awareness and prevention. Teen Dating Violence workshop flyer Resolutions for CMA House of Delegates needed by June 30 Resolutions for the CMA District 10 caucus are due by June 30. The caucus is the first stop on the way to the CMA House of Delegates, which meets this fall to consider resolutions from around the state. Submitting resolutions to the House of Delegates is the most direct way for members to influence CMA’s policies and activities, including its advocacy agenda. Resolutions can address virtually any medical practice or health-related topic, or any aspect of the policies and activities of organized medicine. Each member will receive one free copy of the directory, which lists every practicing physician in the county and provides detailed specialty indexes and membership listings. Additional copies of the directory will cost $30 for MMS members ($25 when purchasing five or more) and $40 for nonmembers, health care companies and the general public ($35 when purchasing five or more). The new system, called computerized physician order entry (CPOE), began with nurses in 2010 and has now been implemented for doctors and other clinical team members. “While the change in workflow has been challenging for some staff members,” said hospital CEO Lee Domanico, “more than 150 studies conducted since 2007 have confirmed that organizations using health information technology, like CPOE, have seen positive outcomes.” He noted that CPOE can result in better management of chronic diseases and increased compliance with clinical guidelines.
